About Senator Nat G. Kiefer
In 1987, the name of the UNO Lakefront Arena was officially changed to the Senator Nat G. Kiefer University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena.
Senator Kiefer served as a Louisiana State legislator from New Orleans from 1969 to 1985. His unique style made him a most effective floor leader during his term. For Senator Kiefer’s efforts in bringing to completion the nearly 20-year project that had first begun in 1964, the arena is named in his honor.
“When I ride past it, I get a good feeling,” Kiefer said in a 1983 interview with The Times-Picayune, two years before his death. “I look at it and think it was worth all the time and effort a great number of people put into it.”
Senator Kiefer died in 1985 at the age of 46. Though he is no longer with us, his family proudly boasts of the facility that bears his name.
Senator Kiefer was married to Carol Ann Hazard. Together they had 4 children Nat G. Kiefer Jr., Kent Kiefer, Karen Ann Kiefer, and Kris Patrick Kiefer.
